facebook repeals opt-out Beacon ads

How is Facebook worth a supposed $15 billion in three years (say it out loud a few times)? It has something to do with the worth of the masses of data it now has on its growing population of users and the opportunities to monetise this. Just today after facebookers protested, Facebook apologised for it’s default ‘opt-out’ rather than ‘opt-in’ to its Beacon advertising technology. It is an interesting one as we’re all bombarded with advertising where ever we go online these days and perhaps Beacon in some user controlled manner can actually assist in bringing us contextual and relevant ads instead of ones we simply switch off to. However, the pitfalls exist where Beacon advertising begins to negatively intrude on our privacy. Do we really want everyone to know our online buying habits?
